Parents
My consultation with parents frequently focuses on school-related issues and is often the prelude to a psycho-educational assessment in order to shed light on learning and/or social-emotional challenges.
Parents also consult me on home-related issues that may be of a sensitive nature.
Parents also request consultation concerning the management at home of children with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).
All consultations with parents are confidential and information is only shared with the school personnel with the parents’ written consent.
Adopted children
International schools, not unexpectedly, have a large number of children who are adopted. Parents frequently consult me about the special learning and social-emotional challenges of their adopted child or children. I work with adoptive parents to help them understand the particular challenges faced by their child, how many of the challenges have arisen from pre-adoption trauma, and how to ameliorate or manage the difficulties so that experiences at school and home are more productive for their son or daughter. With parental permission, I also work with a child’s teacher so that they have a better appreciation of the challenges faced by the child.
